The story of Morgantown, WV begins around 1772, when Colonel Zackquill Morgan settled along the Monongahela River near the mouth of Decker’s Creek. In 1785, the Virginia General Assembly chartered 50 acres of Morgan’s land as Morgan’s Town. The settlement received a municipal charter as Morgantown, Virginia in 1838, and became part of the newly created state of West Virginia in 1863. Growth accelerated in 1867 with the founding of West Virginia University and again with the arrival of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1886, which opened the region to the coal, oil, and gas industries that would shape the local economy for decades.   • Morgantown takes its name from Colonel Zackquill Morgan, a Revolutionary War officer who served as County Lieutenant of Monongalia County.
