The story of Morgantown, WV begins around 1772, when Colonel Zackquill Morgan settled along the Monongahela River near the mouth of Decker’s Creek. - Morgantown takes its name from Colonel Zackquill Morgan, a Revolutionary War officer who served as County Lieutenant of Monongalia County. On October 17, 1785, the Virginia General Assembly chartered 50 acres of his land as “Morgan’s Town,” and the original street grid he laid out is largely still in place downtown today.
